The Buffs will WIN the game Saturday!
In recent years, the Rams have stayed close with the Buffs and have one a few here and there, however the fact remains that Colorado State has defeated Colorado only twice (1999-2000 & 1948-49) in back-to-back attempts. Our Buffs do not lose back-to-back games to Colorado State!
Right now on paper, Colorado has a distinct advantage. The Buffs have an experienced quarterback (Hansen), speedy receivers (Senior Scotty McKnight; senior Andre Simmons), speedy running backs (Senior Corey Nabors; junior Rodney Stewart; junior Brian Lockridge;) and a potentially dominant offensive line (Senior Nate Solder; senior Keenan Stevens; junior Ryan Miller; junior Ethan Adkins; junior Mike Iltis; junior Sione Tau; junior Shawn Daniels; junior David Clark; junior Blake Behrens;), going up against a decent, but certainly not great, defense.
Meanwhile, the Colorado State offense will try and protect a true freshman quarterback with four new offensive linemen, and do so against a defensive line which returns completely intact from 2009(Senior Marquez Herrod; junior Curtis Cunningham; junior Josh Hartigan; junior Tony Poremba; junior Conrad Obi; junior Eugene Goree;). When asked to pass, Pete Thomas will have to try and out-think two senior cornerbacks(Senior Jimmy Smith; senior Jalil Brown).
This season, Tyler Hansen was named the starter a full two weeks before the opener. He also received assurances from both head coach Dan Hawkins and offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau that he is not on a short leash. For the first time in his career, Tyler Hansen should be able to take the field not looking over his shoulder. The 2010 team is his team. It’s time for Tyler to take charge of the Colorado Buffaloes, and make it his team.
With Hansen starting and prone to take off and run, might have some issues with our offensive line that only returns senior left tackle Nate Solder and junior Ryan Miller as consistent starters. Without the experience, new starters must learn how long to hold the pocket for Tyler.
While Colorado may tear off the red-shirts of as many as five freshmen on Saturday, Colorado State may go the Buffs two better. The CSU media release indicates that the Rams may start seven true freshmen against Colorado. Hopefully giving us the advantage.
The Rams will again be starting with a new quarterback this fall. True freshman Pete Thomas gets the nod, and Buff fans are salivating, thinking about what the CU defensive line might do to get after the rookie quarterback.
Senior placekicker Aric Goodman will likely be the first kicker to post points for Colorado against Colorado State. Goodman, who has gone 15-for-32 in his career at Colorado (10-for-18 last season), “kicked great (in the final scrimmage Saturday), and has been kicking good,” said Dan Hawkins. “Kicking is a little different than other positions; it’s simple math. He’s had a nice camp and has kicked well in scrimmages.”
On defense, the Rams are better positioned, with seven starters returning.
For Colorado State to defeat Colorado at Invesco Field, the Rams must keep control of the ball, with a strong running game complimented by a short passing game. If the Buffs can force the Rams into third-and-long situations, and can get the lead and force Colorado State to put freshman Pete Thomas up against the Buffs’ senior cornerbacks, Colorado should be successful in keeping the Rams from scoring.
Moral of the story – both Colorado and Colorado State will enter Invesco on a high on Saturday. Both however, will be operating with a fragile sense of confidence. Whichever team gets down early will have a tough time fighting its way back. Colorado State may well be the team with the false sense of security, and the Buffs will need to exploit that shaky confidence early.
